Description
This small work on paper by Martin Canin, measuring 22 x 30 inch, and dating from 1976, is the study for a large painting titled Hagaroma. Color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. It is the study for a large painting titled "Hagaroma" which Canin created while living in Japan. Clearly inspired by the traditional Japanese garment named kimono, this drawing and the painting have the same T-shaped, straight-lined composition. The elegance of these Japanese long robes is here captured through the essential dialogue between the green, red, pink and white geometries.
Canin states, "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting. Manet’s statement still resonates for me: To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still the plastic means to speak my particular expression."
Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1927, Martin Canin is firmly rooted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. In 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. At the end of the 60s he started teaching at the Parsons School of Design.
His has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY. It is part of the Yale University Art Gallery’s permanent collection. -
