Extraordinary and rare daybed by Carl Malmsten for Nordiska Kompaniet
-
Description
Inspired by late 18th century Gustavian examples, this extraordinary Modern Classicism daybed by Carl Malmsten (1888-1972) for Nordiska Kompaniet, features a highly sculptural form, with curved and angled railed end boards emerging from a nearly oval frame around the box spring, ornamented with carved Classical and Swedish motifs in relief, all of which appearing to float on six tapered legs. Fastidiously crafted with a wonderful plasticity by the renowned Nordiska Komponiet Workshop, Stockholm, Sweden, 1920s.
This daybed is a very rare, and quite possibly custom, widened variation of Malmsten’s bateau design. The workmanship by NK's cabinetmakers is extraordinary on this piece. The pine grain has been cut and worked to a buttery smoothness.
