A pair of small Napoleon III kingwood display cabinets on stands
-
Description
A pair of small Napoleon III kingwood display cabinets on stands, each of rectangular form with a single glazed cupboard set on a base with two disguised frieze drawers flanking a large classical ormolu roundel depicting lovers and cherubs, all on fine cabriole legs, decorated with book matched quarter veneers and cross banding on the sides and front, the back and interior also veneered, applied ormolu swags, garlands, edging and sabots. French, circa 1870.
Footnote: Display cabinets were not usually veneered and polished on all sides as they were made to stand against a wall or in an alcove. The fact that these two are free-standing, combined with their small proportions, would suggest that they were a private commission. -
