Description
A William IV mahogany open bookcase by Brown and Lamont, of rectangular form, the top surmounted by a small plinth enclosing a drawer flanked by two turned rails with central tied acanthus bands, all above two adjustable shelves with similar turned columns and a gadrooned edge, stamped Brown & Lamont, Cabinetmakers, Chester. English, circa 1835.
Contemporary Chester trade directories show that only about six people were recorded as working as both upholsterers and cabinet makers in Chester at this period. One such firm, Brown and Lamont took over Gardners, an old established firm of cabinet makers and upholsterers, who were working in the Crypt Building in Eastgate Street, in 1862. Brown and Lamont are represented in collection at the Grosvenor Museum, Chester and they supplied furniture to Eaton Hall, Cheshire. -
