Important Pennsylvania-German Dower chest with unique portrait bust decoration:
Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, dated 1791.
Inscribed in paint: “J & M / GRAFF / D 6 Dec 1791.”
This is the first example of a Pennsylvania-German dower chest known to us decorated with portrait busts of a bride and groom, commemorating the marriage of Jacob Graff to Maria/Mary Schweitzer on December 6, 1791 at the Salem Reformed Church in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. -
