Description
Fire and Water, a bronze and LED wall sculpture, draws influence from the relationship of opposing forces and what is created when those forces combine. Borrowing from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (the acceptance of transience and imperfection), the work reflects aspects of duality in nature such as feminine and masculine or light and dark.
Cast from triangular fragments of charred wood, the transformative character of the source material is preserved in black patinated bronze . The black bronze relief shows the sculpted points facing downward, radiating a warm glow from behind using embedded LED’s, while a curtain of horsehair dramatically descends from the base of the bronze. Shown separately or as a pair, the Fire and Water sconces dramatically echo Art Deco motifs.
New York based contemporary sculptor Erin Sullivan, implements the highest quality casting techniques to create exquisite, realistic bronze interpretations of her organic subject matter. After sculpting models using wax reproductions made from a natural objects, Sullivan creates molds of the final model from which a wax positive is produced. Once this wax is “chased” or reworked with great attention, “gates” or wax rods are attached to create channels through which the molten bronze will travel. The whole structure is then dipped, poured, de-vested, sandblasted, welded, chased, re-detailed, polished and patinated.
As Sullivan works on a commission basis, custom dimensionality as well as finishes may be accommodated for a bespoke piece.
