French Late 18th Century Régence Style Carved Mirror with Floral Decor
-
Description
This French late 18th century Régence style carved mirror features an exquisite rectangular giltwood frame adorned along the corners with delicate floral motifs. The quality of the carving is undeniable. The inner frame, closer to the central beveled glass is adorned with gadroon shaped motifs. The artist showed a perfect balance between the elegant carved areas and the smoother ones, creating a perfectly harmonious frame. With this mirror we are in the presence of ultimate refinement. The Régence period didn’t last long and allowed a perfect transition of power between Louis XIV and his great-grandson Louis XV who was too young to reign when Louis XIV died. The furniture style showed in the same way a smooth transition between the rigor of the sun king’s lines and the coming triumph of the curves. Placed anywhere in a home, this French giltwood mirror would be a focal point to any room, circa 1790.
