Description
Globally known for her ‘Sea Anemone’ series that reflects the beauty found on the ocean floor, German artist Pia Maria Raeder reveals with her new ‘Stardust’ collection a whole other dimension of her abstract vision of nature, further continuing her experimentations on biomorphic forms. According to Pia Maria’s own words: “Just like everyone I am fascinated by the scene of a starry sky. We all instinctively feel the magnetic attraction of these suns’ final splendors, as far as they may be. Living organisms are all made of this stardust that has crossed the universe for billions of years. With ‘Stardust’, I want to give my own interpretation of this natural phenomenon.”
The sculptural ‘Stardust’ Mirror is made of 3,500 beechwood half pearls carved in eight different dimensions and patiently arranged one by one by the artist on a hand-carved body. Comparable to a stellar landscape, the pearl structure then undergoes a custom silver-based metallization process during one week. This very technical last step based on this precious silver metal provides the highest level and the largest spectrum of light possible, conferring each creation its astonishing changing and shimmering reflections. In tune with the intangible spectrum of colors launched by a supernova in fusion, the color and sparkle of the silver coating varies in shade from brown to pink to golden, from blue to black to silvery depending on the light and on the angle it is viewed from. Emancipated from its limits, the wood transformed into undulating living forms is offered a newfound freedom. The breath of life seems to animate this organic creation, like the echo of a nature that is not imitated but is rather harnessed and experienced. -
