Danish Cabinetmaker Teak and Ash Daybed, Denmark ca 1960s
-
Description
Danish Modern Design of the mid-century era was generally exhibited and commented on as being both modern and a kind of Old-World exotica from the far north. In reality, Danish designers’ ambition was to create durable and useful furniture that would enrich people’s everyday lives, and therefore designed functional pieces that were aesthetically just as pleasing.
This gorgeous daybed was inspired by classic Danish furniture design and simplicity. Pieces from the mid-century era, like this daybed, are characterized by clarity in design and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials. In this daybed’s case, the beautiful combination of the teak base and the ash wood lamellae are in the focus, making any ornamentation unnecessary. The streamlined solid wood frame of this model features a slatted top, and sturdy yet slim and sculpted legs. Ash wood is strong, durable, and typically light in colour with fairly straight grain. This enhances the horizontality of the top and directs the eyes to the slats and the metal nails arranged symmetrically. From the minimalistic design to the focus on the woods, this daybed has the characteristics of “honest” design that has been a core concept among Scandinavian furniture designers and makers. The sleek look is the result of the clean lines, functional design and expert craftsmanship.
If there is a single common denominator for Danish Modern, it is not so much the design or form as the quality of the execution, the woodwork, and materials used. This daybed excels in these areas, bringing modernism and quality to any space.
