Set of Four Gustavian Neoclassical Chairs by Erik Ohrmark
-
Description
Erik Öhrmark is considered to be Sweden’s foremost chairmaker during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He manufactured and delivered virtually all the seating furniture, including the famous Sulla chairs according to drawings by L Masreliz to Gustav III’s pavilion at Haga. These are noted to have been possibly commissioned for the pavilion as well as part of the suite. Worth mentioning are also the orders placed for Stockholm and Tullgarn castles.
This set of four chairs existing from the same suite is rare, and, fine examples (of more than two together of note). of the artist's work. Erik Ohrmark, active from 1777-1813, was the Chair maker to the Royal Swedish Court in Stockholm and provided much of the seat furniture for Gustaf III's pavilion at Haga. A similar chair is in the Nordiska Museet, in Sigurd Wallin, Mobler fran Svenska Herremanshem, Lund 1979, ill. 1142. -
