Description
Etienne-Henri Martin was a visionary French designer who left an indelible mark on the industry. These '1500' lounge chairs are one of this most well known designs. Crafted in the 1960s for TFM (Thevenin Fert & Mayet) until 1976, then Mangau-Atal Mobilier National thereafter, they continue to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike with their unique and sculptural silhouette.
These chairs epitomize the bold and innovative design ethos of the era. With their dynamic form and lack of excessive decoration it is evident that these chairs reflect the 20th century's fascination with modernism. Their architectural precision makes these chairs memorable— the single uninterrupted line and graceful curves, result in a design that seamlessly bridges the gap between classic and avant-garde aesthetics. The synthesis that this pair has achieved between form and function is outstanding; aesthetics and utility come together in a purely mid-century manner. Without any tufting or festooning, the focus is on the round, flowing lines of the bodies and their upholstery. Not only this, but the upholstered bodies appear to be floating, greatly adding to the visual interest.
Interior architecture and interior design would be unimaginable today without elements of mid-century modern. As seen in these chairs, many hallmarks of the period are constantly reappearing: furniture classics as eye-catching statements, understated, geometric design for a touch of minimalism, and organic curves.
