European Patinated Oak and Leather Chairs with Upholstery Tacks, Europe ca 1900s

Sold Sold
  • Description
These four artisanal chairs preserve the best visual qualities of the Baroque and Jacobean Revival styles. This specific style came back into fashion when large country houses were being remodelled in the Baroque taste towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

Composed of two main materials, these side chairs take advantage of the classic pairing of solid wood and leather. The patinated oak and cognac leather complement each other and provide an elemental, timeless look, which is why these chairs - unlike their more ornamented contemporaries - still fit into modern interiors. The leather is fitted with upholstery tacks on each chair, a time-consuming technique that is traditionally done by hand. This is evident as the nails are slightly unevenly placed, making each chair one-of-a-kind. This rustic quality created by the metal dome nails sets the aesthetic while also framing the leather backs and wood seats. At the same time, the wood’s role as a decorative element is equally important to the design, with hand carvings on the “ears” and on the legs. The sled bases are perfect surfaces to showcase the carvings in the oak. The attention to detail and craftsmanship are indicative of the quality of furniture produced during the turn of the 20th century. Like the wood, the leather has a warm, rich tone that has deepened and matured with age, making the chairs even more attractive.

The combination of the oak and leather gives the chairs a classic, timeless look that will never go out of style. These chairs were likely used in a formal setting, such as a dining room or parlour, where they would have been the centrepiece of the room. Today, this set of four is the perfect addition to inject period character into any interior.
