Gio Ponti Mid Century Modern Lounge Chair 1960s
-
Description
With its organic curves and atomic age style this 60s era lounge chair by renowned Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti is the essence of Mid-Century Modern design. With a nod to Marco Zanuso's iconic "Lady Chair" introduced a decade earlier in 1951, Ponti constructs his lounge chair in parts and follows a similar outline for his silhouette. It's where Ponti's chair diverges from the Zanuso piece that Ponti's design takes on its own unique and decidingly futuristic look. One can't be certain, but one would think that Gio Ponti, one of the greatest designers of the 20th century, didn't design things by accident. Taking inspiration from graphic arts, Ponti models his side arm panel after a shape well known and often used in Mid-Century Modern graphic design to invoke the future. Whether it's by design or not, it certianly does just that.
Newly upholstered in a rich teal velvet with legs in brass. Designed by Gio Ponti. Italy 1960s
