Description
Available today, this magnificent Mid-Century Modern ten dining chair set n hardwood & beige leather by Joaquim Tenreiro in the sixties is the find of the year!
Each chair features a solid Rosewood structure upholstered in beige leather. The legs and the backrest are delicately curved and the square seat is very comfortable. The wood work is absolutely stunning, characteristically of Joaquim Tenreiro.
The set was designed specifically for Bloch Editors, a publishing & broadcasting Brazilian conglomerate. Sergio Rodrigues and Joaquim Tenreiro were both hired to design Modern furniture for the Bloch’s headquarters in Sao Paulo and these chairs belonged to the salons as is shown in the vintage publications attached.
The original upholstery was beige faux leatherette and we decided to keep the line by reupholstering the piece in Italian Beige leather. The rosewood has been refinished and displays colorful wood veins. Besides the marks of age mostly in the legs, the set is in excellent condition. Most of the chairs preserve Bloch’s patrimony plaque in the back of the seat rest.
The set is showcased in our showroom with a glass top and chrome base structure by Forma and the convo is nothing less than spectacular. This set would look incredible in any modern, Mid-Century Modern, or contemporary environment.
About the author: Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) was among the leading furniture designers and visual artists in mid-20th century Brazil. Tenreiro was born in Melo, Gouveia Municipality, Portugal into a family of woodworkers and carpenters. In the late 1920s, he emigrated to Rio de Janeiro and began working for the firm of Laubisch & Hirth.
In the early 1940s, Tenreiro was among the first designers in the Brazilian furniture industry to adopt a European modernist vernacular. His initial efforts, including the 1942 "Poltrona Leve", met with considerable success, and in 1943 he established his own firm with factories in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. However, it was not until the 1950s that he began to be recognized as a master furniture designer in Brazil. His design philosophy found a great response with architects who supported modernism.
