SET OF SIX FEDERAL SIDE CHAIRS SIMILAR TO THOSE AT MOUNT VERNON

Philadelphia ? Circa 1795
Primary Wood: Mahogany
Secondary Wood: Ash, Tulip Poplar
Height: 35 3/4 inches
Width: 19 ½ inches
Depth: 17 ¼ inches
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the Museum of the City of New York. Given by Miss Adelaide Milton DeGroot in 1936 and said to have descended to her in the Hawley family.
Reference: Chairs with the same splat pattern were made by John Aitken of Philadelphia for George Washington. Those chairs appear in Helen M. Fede, Washington Furniture At Mount Vernon, page 61. These chairs are listed incorrectly as New York in V. Isabelle Miller's 1956 exhibition catalog, Furniture by New York Cabinetmakers, entry 88, which was held at the Museum of the City of New York.
