Slatted Bench by Móveis Ambiente, Brazil, 1965
-
Description
This slatted bench in Jacaranda wood, crafted circa 1965 by Móveis Ambiente, is a standout example of Brazilian modernist design. Its origin is documented in the June 1965 issue of Casa & Jardim magazine. The bench is composed of longitudinally arranged wooden slats set on a hidden support base, creating a striking “floating” effect. Its open slatted design maintains a visual lightness despite the rich mass of jacaranda wood, functioning both as a sculptural element and a seating solution. Its long, low platform of parallel jacaranda slats creates rhythm, lightness, and a floating presence, softened with neutral cushions.
As highlighted in the Casa & Jardim editorial titled "Funcionalidade: elemento essencial em decoração", the bench was used not just for seating but also to subtly divide a room, enabling distinct conversational areas within open-plan interiors. This functional versatility places the piece firmly within the canon of mid-century Brazilian furniture, where form, material, and spatial intelligence converge seamlessly. -
