Pair of Swedish Gustavian Style 1890s Painted Chests with Carved Stars
-
Description
A pair of Swedish Gustavian style painted wood chests from the late 19th century, with marbleized tops, three graduated drawers, dentil molding, carved stars and fluted side posts. Created in Sweden during the last quarter of the 19th century, each of this pair of Gustavian style chests features a rectangular faux marble top with canted corners in the front, sitting above a carved dentil molding followed by three drawers of graduating size. Showcasing a dovetailed construction, the drawers are adorned with slightly raised cartouches surrounding the Classical brass hardware. The façade is flanked with canted side posts with fluted motifs topped by stars carved in low-relief. The chests are painted in a soft color typical of the Swedish taste for light palettes aiming at brightening the rooms during the dark winters of Scandinavia. They are raised on four short tapered feet angled in the front.
