Description
Paolo Buffa’s refined sense of proportion and material detail defined much of mid-century Italian furniture. This sideboard, crafted in the 1940s or early 1950s, captures his architectural approach and decorative sensibility in a carefully balanced design.
Design
Made from richly toned Indian rosewood, the piece features a symmetrical layout with three drawers on either side and two central cabinet doors. The front is adorned with vertical fluted carving—known as grissinatura—which gives the surface texture and rhythm. At the center, the veneered doors are framed with burlwood and inset with square blue glass panels. These panels are internally lit, casting a soft glow that contrasts with the dark wood and adds depth to the cabinet's façade. The geometric shaping continues through the angled profile and sculpted feet, all carved with precision. Handles are reduced to simple round forms, letting the woodwork remain the focal point.
This sideboard reflects Buffa’s ability to combine classical restraint with quiet decorative invention. The lighting detail and carved surfaces lend the piece both presence and a sense of intimacy.
Condition
The piece is in good vintage condition. Minor signs of use are consistent with age, and the interior lighting is functional. The surface has been restored while preserving its original finish. -
