Art Deco Wardrobe In Pallisander Wood By 't Woonhuys, Netherlands 1930s

  • Description
Art Deco wardrobe in pallisander wood by 't Woonhuys. It's impossible not to notice this wardrobe when you walk into the room. The bizarre drama that the palissander  veneer shows in combination with the imposing stature of the cabinet makes a crushing impression. The maker of this cabinet is the Dutch furniture manufacturer of yesteryear, namely 't Woonhuys. Illustrious Dutch designers such as Michel de Klerk and Hildo Krop made many designs for this company, but the drawings were almost never signed. We also suspect that this cabinet was commissioned and is probably unique given the specific design and the costliness of the materials and manufacture, also for that era.We are going to explain this wardrobe in a few short sections to get a better understanding of the design. Let's start with the legs that are in good proportion to the large body and form the basis for the overwhelming but chic look. They are veneered in a refined way and the drawings in the wood always follow the direction of the shape. A slight slope at the front is the organic revelation of the Art Deco style of this object. However a somewhat more subdued variant given the choice of shape and more pronounced due to the use of this specific veneer. From the outer corners of the legs, after a space that has a margin of about five centimeters, we arrive at the corner posts. Incidentally, the spacing accentuates the transition from the legs to the cupboard part and adds airiness to the design. Back to the corner posts again. These are half round over the entire length and are veneered in the direction of its rounded shape. Where the legs form the basis and already show a slight curve, the corner posts seem to continue the line, but this time in a tighter movement. With brass hinges over the entire length, the cabinet doors are carried effortlessly. The hinges can already be seen on the outside of the doors and form a delicate decoration. Before the doors open, the impressive drawings of the veneer is coming towards us. With their color shades and depths, they are a work of art in themselves. Because the most pronounced parts of the veneer point from the bottom and top of the doors, as it were, to the center, our eyes do not shoot in all directions when looking at this wardrobe, but quietly remain focused in the center. That is where the veneer shows a calmer drawing. The locks are located exactly in the middle of the doors with the original keys of 't Woonhuys. After opening the cabinet doors, a generous amount of storage space is revealed. At the bottom left we see two drawers with the sloping shape visible on the side. Above that, the space is divided into five shelves that are veneered on the ends and also add a nice detail. The spaces next to it are equipped with brass rods where you can hang your clothes and there are two more shelves above. The word mark of 't Woonhuys also adorns the left inside of the door. The condition of the cabinet is exceptionally good considering its age and use. Diffusely scattered over the item are some minor scratches and other imperfections, but, in our opinion, this mainly contributes to the authentic character of this special item."
