Antique Korean Scholar Desk Ch'aeksang Joseon Dynasty
-
Description
Known as Ch'aeksang or Soan, this small Korean desk was made from zelkova wood (Korean Elm) and supplement with simple brass hardware fittings. The piece is dated circa early to mid-19th century possibly earlier (Joseon period). Served primary as a floor desk, it was normally placed in the center of men's study by tradition. The low profile was conducive for the user who sat directly on the floor. The piece features a top plank of rounded corners with overhang, a feature that facilitates the writing and viewing the scroll or manuscript. The main portion a single storage space with an interior shelf. The facade is partitioned into an eight square grid design with a pair of door panels open out. There are two corner brackets under the top, nicely carved in cloud pattern, adding a touch of embellishment on this otherwise rational and austere piece. The brass fittings on the front are sparse and minimal, in keeping with the ideal of humbleness of the Confucius society.
The wood was stained quite dark, but the expressive grains of the elm wood could be appreciated easily. The piece shows extensive wear and patina, including small losses and possible historical repair, indicating its age and history. -
