Description
Queen Anne Tray Top Tea Table
Massachusetts, ca. 1730-1750
Maple, Pine Secondary Wood
Provenance: Private Collection, Litchfield Country, Connecticut.
This finely proportioned tea table has an applied molded top above a rectangular frame with cyma-shaped skirt molding supported by graceful cabriole legs ending on pad feet. The history of dark finishes is consistent throughout the piece, possibly suggesting it originally had a mahoganized finish. This was commonly seen in furniture made in the Connecticut River Valley and for those areas where mahogany wasn’t readily available to cabinets shops.
