Description
Steer Weathervane
Attributed to A. J. Harris and Company, Boston, MA (1868-1882)
Full body molded copper, cast zinc and iron.
Over-all in excellent condition, wear, and oxidized surface.
In a rare large, imposing size, this full-body steer has a defined cast zinc head and horns while complimented by a well-proportioned body. The original surface shows traces of yellow sizing and gilt with verdigris oxidation.
J. Harris & Co. (later known as A. J. Harris & Co. and simply Harris & Co.) was a prominent weathervane and ornamental ironwork business in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1868 to 1882. The company was established by Josephus Harris and his son Ansel J. Harris, and became known for its high-quality copper weathervanes. Following Josephus’s death in 1870, Ansel continued to run the company until 1882, after which its molds were acquired by the W. A. Snow Company.
