Description
Depth: 34.0" // Appealing to the rarified taste of China’s literati, this Qing-dynasty table depicts the auspicious objects found in a scholar’s studio, including censers, scrolls, and fine porcelain. The table’s straightforward design puts all eyes on its ten drawers, each intricately carved with cartouche-contained images of prized items, detailed trellis patterns, and stylized Mandarin characters for longevity and good fortune. Minor losses to the drawer fronts have been restored with pieced wood repairs, revealing the loving care taken to preserve the table over nearly two centuries of use. The natural warmth of elmwood and the rich and weathered patina only enrich the table’s stunning decorative presence.
