Description
Antique ormolu mounted dressing table by Zwiener Jansen Successeur
French, c. 1900
Height 153cm, width 134cm, depth 63cm
Superbly crafted by the renowned French firm Zwiener Jansen Successeur, the dressing table is adorned with unusual features and celebrates the elegant Louis XVI style.
The piece is topped by a shaped mirror framed by a delicate ormolu border. From it extend scrolling acanthus branches terminating with two candelabra on each side. Below is a rectangular mirrored top, an unusual addition to pieces of this type. The reflections from the mirrored top as well as the mirror above enlarge the space in which the piece is placed.
The frieze includes three drawers, one larger and two smaller. All are framed by an ormolu border, a design continued all around the dressing table. The three lockable drawers are mounted with ornate escutcheons, the design including laurel leaves.
Four quiver-shaped legs support the antique. These are adorned with large ormolu mounts and terminate with acanthus-shaped ormolu sabots.
The wood is stamped ‘JANSEN’ and the reverse of mounts marked ‘ZJ’.
Zwiener Jansen Successeur operated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, crafting pieces for European aristocracy and royalty. The dressing table in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is guaranteed to add a touch of sophistication to a space.
