Madsen & Schübel
Danish
Madsen & Schübel was a mid-century Danish design partnership between Henry Hans Schübel (also known as Acton Schubell) and Arnold Madsen, later succeeded by his son, Ib Madsen. Active from the 1940s to the early 1960s, the duo became best known for their elegant lounge chairs—particularly the Clam chair and the celebrated Prague ("Pragstolen") chair—designed for the Dutch manufacturer Bovenkamp. Their designs featured sculptural wooden frames crafted from oak, teak, and stained beech, often upholstered in luxurious sheepskin or lambswool. These iconic pieces are revered today as prime examples of Scandinavian modernism and high craftsmanship in mid-century design.
