Molded Rosewood Plywood Folding Screen FSW-6 for Herman Miller #57 of 500
-
Description
As Charles and Ray Eames saw it, designers just want to have "serious fun." This 68-inch-high, undulating screen resulted from their play. It's a portable, foldable, enjoyable way to divide space, provide a backdrop, and add privacy. The screen was designed as a complement to other Eames molded plywood creations. It's also a stand-alone piece distinctive in all kinds of settings.
Each Eames screen panel is five-ply strength. The screen's rosewood inner plies are sandwiched between light rosewood veneer to resist warping and separation. Six U-shaped sections. Each section is 9.5" long; the screen unfolds to 60 " long and just 2.25" deep 0.375" thick. Flexible connections. A durable, woven polypropylene mesh connects the six plywood sections so it's easy to adjust the footprint. Folds for storage. Easy to carry and tucks neatly away.
When Charles and Ray Eames designed their now-famous molded plywood chair and molded plywood folding screen in 1946, manufacturer Herman Miller offered the furniture in ash and in rosewood. The rosewood production stopped seven years ago.An eco-conscious company, Herman Miller ceased using the tropical rosewood because it “cannot be harvested, at least with today’s technology, in a sustainable manner,” explains Mark Schurman, a spokesman for the furniture-maker.
But there was an existing supply of rosewood sitting in a Herman Miller warehouse, assigned for repair work only, and it was reaching its shelf life.Rather than scrapping the tropical wood, Herman Miller is putting it to good use: in a limited-edition production of those two Eames designs. Only 500 chairs and 500 screens are being made in the rosewood. This one we have is # 57 out of 500.
According to Schurman, the rosewood ranges in color from “quite light, almost like cherry, to very dark.” All of the wood, though, has the bold graining that is typical to the species. -
