A Heritage Transposed

December 13, 2016 - February 27, 2017

BOX Freiraum

Boxhagenerstr, 96 im Hof der 93, 10245 Berlin, Germany

Iran’s rich cultural heritage and complex history involve social and political upheavals like the Islamic revolution, the Iraq-Iran war, the emancipation of women, and the country’s complicated relationship with the West. A Heritage Transposed poses the question of how perspectives differ between artist in Iran, fellow artists in exile, and foreign artists fascinated by Iranian culture. The exhibition, curated by Anahita von Plotho, includes a broad spectrum of paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations and videos and features works by artists who all share common roots or interests and have different perspectives on Iran, including Shiva Ahmadi, Shoja Azari, Wim Delvoye, Azin Feizabadi, Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh, Anahita Razmi, Neda Saeedi, Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein, Setareh Shahbazi and Robert Wilson. All of the artists involved were chosen based on the originality of their approaches, diverse backgrounds, and their engagement with personal, cultural, political and historical themes. An in-depth discussion on the complex themes of this exhibition, “Art in Iran and the Diaspora,” will be held on February 2, 2017 in cooperation with the Goethe Institut.

Pierre Frey Showroom in DDB

979 Third Avenue, Suite 1611, New York, NY

Directly following the Holiday Showroom Event at the D&D Building on Thursday December 15, the Pierre Frey Showroom will be hosting a book signing of François Catroux with author David Netto. This much-anticipated first volume chronicles the life and work of international master interior designer François Catroux. The volume begins with his first projects in 1968 and spans Catroux’s entire career, with stunning photographs of opulent interiors from around the world, in Paris, New York, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles. Many of François Catroux’s interiors surprise with irregular elements, like an elk-horn chandelier or pink fluorescent lighting, but his design staples include sumptuous sofas, luxurious carpeting, soft lighting elements, and rooms lined with books. Author David Netto is an interior designer and writer based in Los Angeles.

Anthony Caro

Through February 4, 2017

Mitchell-Innes & Nash

1018 Madison Avenue & 534 West 26th Street, New York, NY

Two concurrent exhibitions of the works of the late British artist Sir Anthony Caro are being staged across the Mitchell-Innes & Nash gallery’s Chelsea and Madison Avenue locations. Spanning Caro’s sixty-year career, the exhibition features his works on paper and sculpture that highlight the steadfast, fearless innovation that was a constant throughout his life. He is known as one of the most important sculptors in Britain and of the 20th century, and was knighted by the Queen Elizabeth II in 1987. This exhibition is the first in the US since his death in 2013, but his sixth with the gallery, which represented Caro in New York for 14 years. At the Chelsea location, six large-scale steel and Plexiglas sculptures from 2011-2013 are juxtaposed against four colored paintings on paper from the 1950s. At the Madison Avenue location, four steel, bronze, and brass sculptures are on view alongside gestural black and white ink works on paper, also from the 1950s.

Doris Salcedo: The Materiality of Mourning

Through April 9, 2017

Harvard Art Museums

32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA

The Materiality of Mourning features four installations and many of Doris Salcedo’s works created during the last fifteen years. The Colombian artist is known for her sculpture and public installations that respond to the testimonies of those who are survivors and victims of political violence. Her works evoke themes such as the lasting grief of war, and they honor and mourn those lost to oppression and political violence in her home country and beyond. One seminal work, A Flor de Piel (2013) is one of Harvard Art Museums latest acquisitions, shown publicly for the first time during the exhibition of the Bogotá-based artist. It is a gigantic tapestry made of thousands of preserved hand-sewn red rose petals, and is a shroud for a nurse who was tortured to death in the Colombian war. Held in the Special Exhibitions Gallery, this exhibition will be on view through April 9, 2017.
