Francesco Maria de’Medici in his apartments hung a notable collection of still-life paintings. Six paintings of Stanchi were listed in the Medici Imperial inventory of 1691.
Stanchi works are recorded in the inventory of the Guardarobe and the Palace of Duke Giovann Battista Rospiglio in Rome, the collection of Ferdinando de’ Medici, and in the catalogue of paintings of the Marchese Scotti di Piacenza.
Stanchi’s younger brother, Niccolo worked on the frescoes of the Poggio Imperiale Villa between 1685 and 1686. Niccolo was called “fratello dello Stanchi”. He was also working on Cardinal Flavio Chigi’s property near Siena at San Quirico d’Orcia. Giovanni Stanchi collaborated with Bartolomeo Ligozzi and Pier Dandini on paintings with figures. He also worked on theatrical spectacles, instruments and carriages. His paintings were also commissioned by the Chigi’s.
Stanchi’s knowledge of Flemish paintings, the chromatic scale of his flower petals, particularly of roses, with their infinite graduation of colors, from pinkish-white to intense red, were painted according to the light, which softens the surface. The consistency of the impasto, contrasts with the management of the speckled quality of the leaves, which also reflect the light. Stanchi’s also rendered his precious metal vases with astonishing quality. - More Information
