Description
A fine and large Meiji period bronze of two tigers by Genryusai Seiya, the male standing alert on a rocky outcrop while the tigress laps from a puddle, naturalistically modelled and set into a carved hard wood base, the tigress signed with the seal of Genryusai Seiya. Japanese, c1890.
Footnote: Genryusai Seiya was the master craftsman in charge of a workshop which specialized in export wares of the highest quality. Production included human genre figures, vases and exotic bronze models of animals probably influenced by the opening of Tokyo Zoological Gardens in 1882. -
