Description
A fine and large Meiji period bronze of two tigers by Genryusai Seiya, the male standing alert on a rocky outcrop while the tigress laps from a puddle, naturalistically modelled and set into a carved hard wood base, the tigress signed with the seal of Genryusai Seiya. Japanese, c1890.
Footnote: Genryusai Seiya was the master craftsman in charge of a workshop which specialized in export wares of the highest quality. Production included human genre figures, vases and exotic bronze models of animals probably influenced by the opening of Tokyo Zoological Gardens in 1882. -

Starting out as a ‘man with a van’ he quickly gained a good reputation and embarked on a longstanding relationship with Harrods. He was later joined by his wife, Caroline Wallrock. Caroline having completed a Persian degree, went on to study at Christie’s fine art and then joined Sotheby’s specializing in Islamic and Japanese works of art
