The selection of rich mahogany timbers for the drawers is notable with golden currents of grain swell that glow beautifully against the scarlet hue of the darker grain patterns. There is a sense of excellence and careful choice in every element of this chest-on-chest. The crest projecting around the top has a tight dentil-molding with each repeating tooth separated by a circle with a dot. Details that allow a surface nearly devoid of embellishment to be a powerful design statement.
Each drawer is hand dovetailed in the typical manner with tight pins in the thin cut oak secondary woods. The front joints are surrounded by a thin cockbead molding that frames the drawer attractively and protects the veneer edges. Original cast brass pulls are retained on each drawer.
Two standout elements in this chest are 1) the attractively diminutive height, standing at just shy of 66", and 2) the unusual form of the bracket feet, each with an integral spur that curves out like a rolling wave, the profile of the bracket foot mirrored with a rain-channel carving around the edges.
A piece that was clearly cared for and cherished, it remains in fine original condition and is an excellent presentation piece.
