Description
One of the earliest known examples of Philadelphia furniture, the construction and design of this spice box suggest that it was made in the late 1600s. The drawers are framed by red cedar moldings. Spice boxes were popular among Quaker families in the Delaware Valley during the early to mid-1700s. They provided secure, organized storage for costly imported spices and other small valuables such as silver teaspoons.
