Marei Rei
Amelie Marei Loellmann, professionally known as Marei Rei, was born in Germany in 1984 and now lives and works in Berlin. She grew up in a family for which creativity as an integral part of upbringing. She naturally oriented towards an artistic career, following in her brothers' footsteps – one of them being Valentin Loellmann, an award-winning artist of collectible design.
Marei Rei graduated from the Weissensee School of Arts in Berlin in 2013, before starting her career in fashion design collections. She exhibited her work in diverse institutions including the Heidelberger Kunstverein, the Industriemuseum Chemnitz and the Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz in Berlin. She has also been collaborating on various projects as a costume designer for Jana Unmüßig. She soon became the recipient of the Elsa Neumann grant, and was then shortlisted for the German Design Awards and for the Marianne Brandt Prize. She won an award at the Berlin Prize for Creation in 2014.
She has developed a poetical language in combining traditional weaving techniques with concrete. Her transdisciplinary approach bridges contemporary design, fine arts and performing arts, which allows her to experiment with objects in order to surprise the viewer.
