Japanese Lacquer Jewelry Box Rinpa School Meiji Period

A beautiful Japanese jewelry box in the form of a portable cabinet with handle on top, a removable door and three inner drawers. The lacquered box was lavishly decorated on surface in the Rinpa School style. In contrast with a black kuro urushi background, stylized Japanese lilies flowers and dragonflies were highlighted dramatically, using large and thick gold and pewter sheet interspersed with shell inlay (Kanagai and Raden in Japanese respectively). The box is signed and sealed as Ogata Korin (1658-1716), who with his brother Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743), were the key members of the Rinpa school in Edo period. Although the box was likely made in Meiji period in the style of Korin, its design completely embraces the spirit of Rinpa school; Bold, graphic and enigmatic, the stylized rendition instilled the essence and possible motions from the basic forms of its subjects without overly concerning the details. The alternate use of the gold, pewter and shell created an overall harmonious design but also continuously interesting focal points as one turns the box. The three inner drawers were decorated with swaying autumn grasses in gold maki-e. The patinated brass hardware is original and of the period.
