Description
From a single owner estate, this beautiful and iconic Brutalist PE-128, sculpted bronze "Stalagmite" was realized by the iconoclastic and fabled designed Paul Evans for Directional in 1969. It features a welded sculptural and heavily textural bronze base with tapered forms- resembling stalagmites- ascending upwards, with concave interstices separating them. These forms support a round piece of clear glass, representing the surface of the cocktail table. While this is a perfectly functional cocktail table, it is also an important work of 20th century art/design, sure to delight discerning collectors, as well as those with a penchant for rare and exquisite pieces. The table is signed "PE 69" on the interior and is in excellent vintage condition.
Paul Evans (1931-1987) was an American furniture designer, sculptor, and artist, celebrated for his contributions to the American Craft Movement of the 1970s. Throughout the 1960s, Evans designed pieces that "drew inspiration from the sculpture work of Picasso, Harry Bertoia and Julio González" (NY Times, Bernstein, 2017). His clients include Tommy Hilfiger, Lenny Kravitz, Robert Loughlin, Cher, and many other celebrities, and design cognoscenti. The market for Paul Evans works remains as robust as ever with multiple pieces selling at auction within the last five years for upwards of $250k.
