1805 sampler by Frances Spriggs. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours black, yellow, green, copper, white, brown and pink. Verses read, 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to Stand< As the first effect of an Enfants hand< And while her fingers on the canvas move< Ingage her tender thoughts to seek thy love< And with thy dear children let her have a part< And write thy name thy self upon her heart'. And, 'No minutes surely bring more content< Than those in pleasing useful studies spent'. Signed and dated, 'Frances Spriggs her work June the 1 1805'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely detailed, including a house with a garden, birds, potted flowering plants, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, sheep and dogs. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Stitched to linen.
