Description
One of the most striking -- and rare -- vases ever produced by the Mougin ceramics firm in France, this vase ringed by four nude male figures clasping hands was sculpted by Gaston Goor. The artist was famous for illustrating a number of books by Roger Peyrefitte amongst others. Goor was deeply influenced by the paintings he found at the Louvre in his youth and his work often depicts male figures with an implicit, or sometimes explicit, homoerotic theme. This piece is gorgeously glazed in hues that subtly move from creamy and rosier tones. They were produced by Joseph and Pierre Mougin, who were closely associated with the Ecole de Nancy. Joseph and Pierre Mougin were known for ceramic pieces characterized by deep incised lines and gorgeous glazes.
