Fine Lignum Vitae Mortar by “F West” with a Companion Pestle, 17th century
-
Description
This mortar is particularly large with a superb color and patination. The matching pestle of exceptional size is unmarked but is a perfect complement to the mortar. It is very rare to find marks on wooden mortars so the name “F West” could denote a maker but equally could be an owner’s stamp.
Both pieces English c. 1690

Mortar: 8 1/4 ins wide and 8 3/4 ins high
Pestle: 4 1/2 ins wide and 14 ins high -
