-
Description
An important large, rare early Paolo Venini hand blown clear Murano glass chandelier, both sides comprised of five rods of faux bois glass capped with brass from which 10 curved stems with traces of mercury glass radiating from the interior ending with ribbed glass bowls newly wired for the U.S. market and suspended by two brass poles and matching canopies. This work is published in "Venini Glass," by Franco Deboni, photographed on page 53 with corresponding Venini Catalogue entry drawing #133 originally published in 1940. (Documentation in photographs below.)
This chandelier was designed and executed between 1933-34 after Paolo Venini split with his partner Cappelin and started his own glass business in 1925. Napoleone Martinuzzi, the accomplished sculptor and artist was appointed artistic director of Venini & C. and with his innovative creations catapulted the company to the forefront of the glass industry. When Martinuzzi left In 1932, the talented Milanese architect, Tomasso Buzzi briefly replaced him continuing the trajectory of his predecessor until another legendary architect, Carlo Scarpa joined the company and served as Venini's artistic director for more than a decade. The early artistic triumvirate: Martinuzzi, Buzzi and Scarpa together with Paolo's Venini's vision, ushered in the dazzling, modern era of glass making that continues to exist today. -
