A "Four Seasons" Art Deco style Sideboard/Buffet, circa 1940
-
Description
Cleanly designed and beautifully crafted, this 1940s Art Deco sideboard or buffet is finished with gorgeous panels of Macassar ebony veneer, laid in a vertical and diagonal pattern to create a subtle geometric effect on the front side of the piece. The sideboard has four paneled doors, each featuring what we would consider the greatest detail of this piece -- four gilded bronze mounts, superbly sculpted, representing the Four Seasons. One mount features Old Man Winter with an stylized snowflake to one side; one features a satyr shown with the bounty of the vineyard, representing Autumn; a third, Primavera, depicts a female youth framed with spring flowers; and the fourth, summer, is framed by the plantings of the hot, sunny season in France. The sideboard is elevated on a recessed platform finished in sycamore. The top is protected by a glass panel.
