Description
A ceramic closed-form pot by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). This iconic form by the artist takes the simplest organic form but is instilled with a deeper philosophy. The void space and the air trapped inside of the pot was considered by the artist as important as the physical material that defines the space. The pot showcases a white body with a dipped glaze on the lower half body. It was created with the artist's signature abstract and poetic approach: free hand and organic. The earthy glaze colors are sober with subtle shades intermixed. The imperfection of the glaze accidents and a kiln fragment stuck onto the piece during the firing process were intentionally left as they were, highlighting the artist's wabi-sabi spirit and aesthetics. Signed with incised TT on the base.
The artist's work, heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics, elevated pottery into the status of fine art.
