In European mid-century design, there was an early emphasis on wood as it connected everyday objects, such as furniture to nature. With its rustic presence and nicely weathered patina, this trestle bench is a perfect example of this sentiment, and of the visual benefits of an understated, organic design.

This bench has an elementally rustic look in which a rectangular top sits on a trestle base with a cross stretcher. With its simple lines and aged appearance, this bench gives an impression of authenticity. The marks of organic modernism can be observed in the unornamented solid wood body, the exposed mortise and tenon joints, and the raw surfaces. The material of this bench projects an air of strength and solidity, yet, thanks to the distance between the top and the stretcher, it still manages to look airy. The rectangular top is supported by an interesting lower structure, including trestle legs that are defined by the expert woodworking. The precise connecting and adjusting elements are akin to the Japanese “Kumiki”, a wooden building technology where grooved wood pieces are joined together to form sturdy three-dimensional objects, and making it possible to produce longer pieces.

The simple design serves the purpose of showing the understated beauty of natural materials and their endless possibilities under the hands of an expert craftsman. The cracks and beautiful patina further elevate the rustic look, while the height perfectly balances out the thickness of the wood. This bench is entirely unique thanks to its own particular characteristics and charm; no other one will ever look exactly the same.
