    Rare ceramic candlestick by the master ceramicist Georges Jouve, signed to base.
    Georges Jouve was born in Fontenay-sous-Bois, France in 1910, beginning his formal training in design and sculpture first at the École Boulle, and then later at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1930, Jouve worked as a stage designer, but was a drafted into the army in 1939. and was taken prisoner by the Nazis and interned in a camp.After several unsuccessful escape attempts, Jouve fled to his parent’s home in Drôme in the South of France. It was in this town that Jouve began to learn the medium of ceramics, to which he applied his knowledge of sculptural forms. In 1945, Jouve moved to Paris, and he opened an atelier for ceramics on the rue de la Tombe-Issoire. Hebecame the favourite potter of design magazines and attended many exhibitions such as the Salons des Artistes Decorateurs. He left Paris and settled in Aix-en- Provence with other important potters of the day. He had important exhibitions in Paris and Marseilles. Sadly he died in March 1964. His career as a pottery was exemplary, he created new trends and invented his own style. His pieces can be ound in major collections and Museums.
