Description
An exceptional quality and rare Central European Nero Portoro serpentine marble topped gilt-wood console table of large proportions and fine original patina.
Probably Austrian - circa 1810-1820.
The shaped and moulded Nero Portoro marble top of excellent choice, above an ornate bead and reel moulded frieze with C-scrolls, trellis cartouches and carved shell motifs. The central mask flanked by mythological creatures, above a pierced scrolled hanging apron with conforming motifs.
The whole raised on a pair of ornate cornucopia shaped and partially reeded supports finishing with acanthus clad legs on paw feet, raised upon a moulded plinth with carved mythological beasts and medallions having a faux marble surround to the base. The original water gilding of the finest colour and patina.
Standing extremely well, this bold and imposing console is seemingly a one off in design, most probably commissioned privately. Retaining the original thick slab of Nero Potoro, being undercut so to refine its look, comes from Italy having been extracted around the time of the Roman Empire and used since the early 18th century for fine furniture, being know as the finest black marble in the world.
A rare unique console of imposing scale in wonderful original condition for the connoisseur collector.
