An early and fine still life by the master, Severin Roesen, dating to his early period in New York. This still life features many of Roesen’s iconic elements. Identified and catalogued on p. 122 of Severin Roesen by Judith Hansen O’Toole (Bucknell University Press, 1992).
Roesen, originally a porcelain painter, was known for his floral and fruit still life paintings. This is one of only a handful of paintings that Roesen dated. This painting dates to a period when Roesen was still in New York but was purchased from the estate of Julia Wagner of Williamsport where Roesen lived from about 1860 to 1872. According to Roesen scholar Judith O’Toole, a number of Roesen paintings completed in New York made their way to Williamsport.
Provenance: Purchased by Dorothy and Ernest Latham 1973 from ROAN, Inc. (estate of Julia Wagner, Williamsport, PA) thence by family descent. -
