Galt Monumental Sterling Silver Ewer In Grape Pattern Circa 1910

    One of a kind and extraordinary sterling silver ewer, monumental in size by Galt Brothers, circa 1910. Body of the ewer designed in high shoulder baluster form, decorated with grape clusters , leaves, and vines in beautiful relief. Handle designed in a grape-cordon form with clusters of grapes and twining shoots. Measuring approximately 17 inches tall and 10.2 inches from handle to spout. Weighing 58.5 troy ounces. Bearing hallmarks as shown in images.

    On one side of the pitcher, there is a dedicatory inscription from his children to Senator Perkins. George Clement Perkins (1839 – 1923) was an American businessman and politician. A member of the Republican Party, Perkins served as the 14th Governor of California from 1880 to 1883, and as United States Senator from California from 1893 to 1915. He also served in the California State Senate.

    Galt was founded in 1802 and was active for 200 years in Washington D.C, serving presidents and local residents as a silversmith and jewelry maker. The first watch President Abraham Lincoln ever owned was being repaired at the shop when he died. Edith Galt, who took over management of the store following her husband’s death in 1908, married President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. The photo of the store’s interior pictured above was taken on their wedding day. President John F. Kennedy commissioned a plaque from Galt in 1963 for the Sultan of Zanzibar was never picked up following his assassination, and remained in the store for decades. When the business closed down in 2001, it was the longest operating business in the District.
