Description
Rare and valuable 20th century reproduction of the famous "Transat Chair" designed by none other than world renowed Irish designer Eileen Gray (1878 - 1976). There were only 12(!) original pieces of this Art Deco/ Bauhaus design icon built and almost all disappeared in private collections or museums. We know only one that has been sold in 2016 at an auction for $1.5 million. In this special case, our offered Transat chair is not a cheap copy which can be (unfortunately) found on the market from time to time, this is a high quality mid-1970s reproduction, which is already really rare and hard to find nowadays. That´s why we also kept the idea to leave it in it´s absolutely untouched, original condition, even if there are those small chips on the black laquered frame. Also all metal pieces on this chair were made of fine nickel-plated brass elements unlike the chromed metal used for the "cheap" copies. The wonderful shaped, tiltable headboard adjusts itself for the most comfortable position.
Designed 1927 as deck chair for her and her´s partner - Rumanian architect Jean Badovici - famous villa E 1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin/ France, the name "Transat" was used as an abbreviation for "Transatlantic" referring to steamship travel and the deck chairs commonly used on such ships. The Transat Chair has become one of Eileen Gray's most important signature pieces. -
