Joanna Poag

American

Joanna Poag's artwork delves into the intricate interplay of time, structure, personal narrative, and memory. Using colored clay, she constructs dynamic collages that blend traditional quilt patterns with linear motifs, capturing a sense of movement within her pieces.

Her choice of materials—textiles, paper, and clay—engages in a dialogue that explores themes of softness, resilience, and the steadfastness of narrative. Poag sees collage as a powerful tool for deconstructing and rearranging existing elements, echoing a tradition of women crafting intricate compositions from found fragments throughout history.

Drawing from her own experiences of fragmentation, her work reveals and obscures information, mirroring the complexities of human existence. Poag holds an MFA from the School for American Crafts at RIT and a BS from Roberts Wesleyan College. Alongside her artistic practice, she shares her passion as an Art Instructor in Rochester, NY, where she resides with her husband and three children.
