Sylvia Eustache Rools and Jérôme Pereira
French
Artist Sylvia Eustache Rools is captivated by minerals, rocks, and oxidation processes, leading her on a creative journey to explore what she terms "textile geology." She meticulously transforms silks and satins through various techniques, including painting, inking, tinting, macerating, and oxidizing, aiming to evoke a sense of geological timelessness and immortality in her final creations.
Sculptor Jérôme Pereira draws inspiration from the forces of nature, particularly focusing on the concept of balance. Guided by intuition, he allows the material to guide his artistic process, viewing the act of adding an object to the world as a profound responsibility aligned with his environmental convictions.
The collaboration between these two artists birthed the project "Awaré," a unique duo that poetically merges wood and textile. The name "Awaré" draws from the Japanese expression "mono no aware," encapsulating the poignant sense of impermanence, as well as the English adjective "aware," signifying knowledge, alertness, and consciousness.
Teaming up with maison parisienne, Sylvia Eustache Rools and Jérôme Pereira showcase their one-of-a-kind pieces where sculpted wood unveils various facets, balances, and imperfections that are transformed into treasures. A metal structure extends from the wooden base, featuring vertical edges adorned with textiles sewn, painted, tinted, and oxidized to create innovative textures. Blending transparency with opacity and duality with unity, this remarkable duo has crafted a unique collection that speaks of hard-won balances and harmonies.
Awaré gained recognition as a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize 2022, particularly for the acclaimed work "Strata."
