Nancy Billings
American
Nancy Billings, a native of New York, embarked on her creative journey by earning a BFA in Fashion Design from Pratt Institute. Growing up surrounded by fabric in her father's and uncle's fabric stores in the bustling NY garment center, she developed a deep-seated passion for textiles from an early age.
Initially, Billings dedicated her career to teaching fiber arts to students ranging from elementary school to college. However, her transition from fashion design to fiber art felt like a natural evolution, allowing her to explore the same medium in fresh and innovative ways. With over 40 years of experience as a quilt maker, Billings has traversed the spectrum from traditional quilts to cutting-edge contemporary wall art.
Fascinated by texture, Billings employs unconventional materials such as upholstery fabric and sheers to achieve her artistic vision. Alongside fabric dyeing, she incorporates mixed media and photography into her textile art and wearable art creations. Billings's work has been featured in numerous magazines and books, including the recent publication "Quarantine Quilts: Creativity in the Midst of Chaos 2021."
Her artistic prowess extends beyond publications, with her pieces showcased in juried art shows across the country, including esteemed venues like the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and the Red Brick in Aspen, CO. Billings also collaborates with interior designers to create bespoke, site-specific art for discerning clients, showcasing her distinctive style in each unique masterpiece.
