Bernard Howell Leach
1887 - 1979
Bernard Leach CH CBE (1887–1979) was a pioneering British studio potter and art teacher, widely regarded as the Father of British studio pottery. Born in Hong Kong and deeply influenced by his time in Japan, Leach bridged Eastern and Western ceramic traditions, blending Japanese aesthetics with English craftsmanship. In 1920, he founded the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall, alongside Shoji Hamada, introducing Japanese techniques such as the climbing kiln to the West. His influential book, A Potter’s Book (1940), shaped generations of ceramic artists worldwide. Leach's legacy lives on through his writings, his global network of apprentices, and the continued work of the Leach Pottery.
